  • Member of the Kentucky Medical Association Board of Trustees 2016-18
  • Specializes in Cataract and Refractive Surgery including LASIK and PRK
  • Performs micro-invasive Glaucoma surgery
  • Over 25 years of surgical experience and has performed over 10,000 ocular surgical procedures
  • Medical degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia
  • Internship and Residency training at the University of Louisville
  • Served as Chief Resident for the University of Louisville Department of Ophthalmology
  • Assistant Clinical Professor for the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Louisville
  • Selected as “Top Doc” and “Top Surgeon” by his peers multiple times in Louisville Magazine
  • Actively involved in lobbying efforts to ensure that patients continue to receive safe eye surgery by well-trained Ophthalmologists in the state of Kentucky


Legislative Chair Dr. Frank Burns and the KAEPS Board of Directors set the legislative strategy for the organization.

The involvement of KAEPS members is integral to the success of the organization's legislative initiatives.

Commonwealth Alliances is a comprehensive governmental advocacy and consulting firm based in Frankfort, Kentucky.  The team includes partners Patrick Jennings and Karen Thomas Lentz, as well as Senior Associate Kate Wood.

Patrick Jennings has 16 years of experience in Kentucky politics having worked on campaigns, congressional staff, and as an association and contract lobbyist. He served two years as a legislative aide to Senator Mitch McConnell before returning home to become chief lobbyist for the Kentucky Farm Bureau.  

Karen Thomas Lentz has 30 years of political experience having worked in both the legislative and executive branch.  She worked for former Speaker of the House Don Blandford and former Governor Brereton Jones as well as serving as legislative liaison and Chief of Staff to former Public Health Commissioner Rice Leach.  

Kate Wood joined the Commonwealth in 2014 after serving in the administration of Governor Steve Beshear as Legislative Liaison and Director of Legislative Services.  Kate began her political career in 2003 working on state and federal campaigns.
